Former FBI Director James Comey says President Donald Trump asked him to drop the FBI’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, the first public indication that Trump had asked the FBI to stop investigating a potential criminal act.
“He said, ‘I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Comey told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on “This Week” in an interview that aired Sunday morning. “He said, ‘He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.’”
Trump has long denied asking Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn, which began after he lied about a conversation with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. The president’s lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that Trump has denied asking Comey to drop the investigation.
“While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” Kasowitz said in the statement. “Additionally, as the president has said many times before, he is not under investigation regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.”
